Horizon Europe: Underground Thermal Energy Storage in dense urban areas

Horizon Europe

This topic seeks to promote the sustainable and optimized use of underground space in dense urban areas for thermal energy storage of different types (e.g., aquifers, closed-loop boreholes, probe-based storage). The objectives include:
Develop technologies, interfaces, design methods, and organizational concepts to integrate UTES systems (ATES, CTES, BTES) into existing urban contexts.
Integrate these systems with existing energy infrastructures (district heating networks, heat pumps, etc.) and manage subsurface interactions with other uses such as tunnels, foundations, and underground utilities.
Improve the predictability of seasonal energy demand to estimate the required underground space, and optimize thermal and energy efficiency.
Study and mitigate the impact of underground urban heat islands on the potential of shallow geothermal energy.
Create demonstrators to validate the techno-economic and environmental suitability, including monitoring, modeling, community involvement, and proposing regulatory/standardization recommendations.
